This annual event is observed in an effort to encourage people to clean their refrigerators in preparation for the upcoming holiday season. Holidays aside, this national day is a good reminder to maintain a clean refrigerator for health and safety reasons as well.

}', 15='{type=string, value=
  1. Empty each shelf. Remove and evaluate all items that are spoiled or inedible. Rather than feel bad about the waste, try to learn from it. “Ask yourself, ‘Why am I tossing this food?"
  2. Consider composting if you do not already.
  3. Check expiration dates.  Foods past their “sell-by” or “use-by” dates may still be safe, and donated to food pantries.
  4. Wilted vegetables are usually fine for cooking or throwing into a soup. Or roast them now, and freeze them for later.
  5. If you have food sitting in your refrigerator that is unused and well within its recommended expiration date that you have no intention of eating, pack a box of these items and donate them to a food drive.
  6. Store Foods to last.  Store leftovers and cooked foods so they stay safe and can be identified later. That’s especially important for foods in the freezer, too.
  7. Completely wipe down the inside of the refrigerator.
  8. Wash drawers and underneath the drawers.
  9. Vacuum condenser coils.
  10. Vacuum out under the refrigerator.
  11. Deodorize: replace or add new box of baking soda to deodorize your fridge.
  12. Restock shelves and drawers with good food.
  13. Use #CleanOutYourRefrigeratorDay to post on social media.

Socks are in style year-round. But October is extra special! Socktober is a time for reaching out to those in need starting from the feet up! One of the most requested items at homeless shelters is, you guessed it, socks! Who knew such a small thing could make a huge difference? And with winter and the holidays coming, it's especially important for us to do what we can to keep hearts and feet warm.

The Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup builds on a national effort as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup®, which to date, has removed over 25 million pounds of trash from America’s waterways. From 2016 to 2019, the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup was recognized by American Rivers for the Most Pounds of Trash Collected and Most Volunteers Mobilized.?

Our cleanup brings together over 3,000 volunteers each year to pick up litter along the Charles River. Residents are drawn to the popular Charles River Cleanup from a desire to give back to their community while enjoying the beauty and wildlife along the river. Volunteers hold onto the connections they establish during this day of stewardship by returning to the Charles to exercise, play and enjoy nature throughout the year.

For the past 18 years, the MitoAction Energy Walk has allowed MitoAction to transform the lives of families impacted by mitochondrial disease. This unforgettable event would not be possible without the generous support of individuals and companies like yours. To date, this Energy Walk has raised over $1M towards improving the lives of seriously ill individuals and their families. We are extremely grateful and honored by the generosity of our community, volunteers and participants who each year make this important day a tremendous success.

With your support, we can continue to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by mitochondrial disease when they need it most.

On behalf of all of the families we serve, we thank you for your consideration and hope you will walk hand-in-hand with us to support the families impacted by mitochondrial disease.

We are currently accepting applications for Spring 2022 Earn-A-Bike in Roxbury and in Jamaica Plain.

Bike School is a series of classes that bring young people together for approximately five weeks to learn basic bike mechanics, refurbish donated bikes, learn safe urban riding, and earn a bike of their own. Throughout Bike School, students also learn to think critically about the systems that contribute to challenges they face every day.

Applications close on May 3, 2022.

Over the course of the program, participants will completely overhaul a bicycle while learning how to safely ride and navigate the City of Boston. During mechanics lessons, participants will learn how to repair parts of the bicycle; then they’ll roll up their sleeves and do it themselves. On group bike rides, participants will learn the ins and outs of Boston’s system of bike lanes and paths, riding to and from parks, basketball courts, and local businesses.

There are no lectures in Earn-A-Bike: you pick out a bike (choose from mountain, road, or BMX bikes), you learn how to rebuild it. When you complete the program, you get to keep it!

The Muddy River Cleanup is a part of the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup; this event takes place throughout the Charles River Watershed and builds on a national effort as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup® which, to date, has removed over 25 million pounds of trash from America’s waterways. From 2016 to 2019, the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup was recognized by American Rivers for the Most Pounds of Trash Collected and Most Volunteers Mobilized.?

The Charles River Cleanup brings together over 3,000 volunteers each year to pick up litter, remove invasive species and assist with park maintenance along all 80 miles of the Charles River. Residents are drawn to the popular Charles River Cleanup from a desire to give back to their community while enjoying the beauty and wildlife along the river. Volunteers hold onto the connections they establish during this day of stewardship by returning to the Charles to exercise, play and enjoy nature throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What supplies are provided for the cleanup?

Trash bags, gloves, and trash grabbers (depending on site and availability) will be provided. All tools that have to be returned will be sanitized before and after the event. At the completion of the cleanup, volunteers will stack the trash, which will be collected by municipal public works departments or the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Each volunteer team will fill out a form reporting how many pounds of trash they collected and what items they found.

Is there a rain date?

The Muddy River Cleanup will be held rain or shine! However, we will make a judgement call in extreme weather situations and will work with volunteers to reschedule them for another date and time to participate in the cleanup in the event we must cancel.

Where can I get more information about a specific cleanup site event?

Once your registration is confirmed for a specific site and date, you will be sent an email on details of your specific cleanup site, including public transit and vehicular navigation, the best areas to park, where to meet, and general health and safety guidelines.

If you need specific information prior to registration, please email volunteer@emeraldnecklace.org.

How can I sign up as a non-profit or school group?

While we suggest a donation for non-profits and schools to help support the execution of this event, we want all who wish to participate in the cleanup to be able to and can work with non-profits and schools on a special rate. To inquire, please contact Alyx Britton at abritton@emeraldnecklace.org and include “Muddy River Cleanup [Non-Profit or School]: [Insert Group Name Here]” in the subject line.

If you have further questions, please contact volunteer@emeraldnecklace.org and include “Muddy River Cleanup Question” in the subject line.
