Food For Free
About
Food For Free improves access to healthy food within our community by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and creating new distribution channels to under-served populations with an emphasis on utilizing school systems to reach those in need. We envision a future where everyone in our community – regardless of age, income, or ability – has consistent access to fresh, healthy, delicious food.
In the United States, about 30-40% of our food goes to waste. At the same time, there are about 125,000 children in Massachusetts who are at risk of going hungry every day. This just doesn't make sense to us! So we operate seven days a week, picking up perfectly good food from grocery stores, farmers' markets, dining halls, bakeries, and more---food that might otherwise end up in the trash. Then we deliver that food to food pantries, meal programs, after school programs, and more, where it can reach the people who need it.
We wouldn’t be here without you. Over 40,000 people are receiving fresh, healthy food because of you. Children are going home on Fridays with food for the weekends. Families are able to pick up beautiful boxes of produce and dry goods when they collect their children at school. People in Cambridge, Somerville, Waltham, Chelsea, East Boston, and beyond are all benefiting from your support.
